Step 3: Size the joint

Caulk performs best when it bridges two sound surfaces without filling an unlimited depth. For a wider approved joint, insert compatible closed-cell backer rod at the depth specified by the sealant manufacturer.

Do not force caulk or foam deep into a window assembly. Large gaps may expose missing flashing or poor installation that needs correction rather than a cosmetic bead.

Step 4: Apply the bead

  1. Cut the nozzle at about 45 degrees, slightly smaller than the joint.
  2. Puncture the cartridge seal if required.
  3. Test flow on scrap material.
  4. Apply a continuous bead while maintaining contact with both sides.
  5. Release gun pressure at the end of each run.

Work in short, manageable sections. A narrow, fully bonded bead performs better than a wide smear over dirty surfaces.

Tool the bead once within the product's working time. The sealant should contact both joint faces without voids.

Remove painter's tape while the bead is wet. Let the sealant cure for the full label period before painting or exposing it to rain, cleaning, or movement.
