Flooring Calculator — Area Plus Waste

Flooring orders need square footage plus extra for cuts, mistakes, and layout pattern. This calculator starts with your room area—measured or entered directly—and adds a waste percentage you control.

It does not calculate box or carton counts because package coverage varies by product width, length, and planks per box. Use the total square footage when comparing product labels at the store.

How will you enter area?
Room shape

Typical range 5–15% depending on room shape, cuts, and install pattern. This tool does not calculate box counts without product dimensions.

How it works

Base area comes from room dimensions (rectangle or simple L-shape) or a direct square footage entry. Total material equals base area multiplied by (1 + waste% ÷ 100). Typical waste ranges from 5% for simple rectangles to 15% or more for diagonal layouts or many cuts.

Important limitations

Waste depends on plank dimensions, install pattern, room shape, and skill level. This tool does not account for closets, stairs, or irregular polygons beyond a basic L-shape. Always confirm order quantity with your retailer using the specific product SKU.

What to do next

Measure carefully, compare the total with your flooring product's coverage per box, and keep extra material for future repairs if the style allows. For raw room measurements, start with the room square footage calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How much extra flooring should I order?
Many installers suggest 5–10% waste for straight layouts in simple rooms, and 10–15% or more for diagonal patterns, lots of corners, or complex shapes. Adjust the waste field to match your layout.
Why doesn't this calculator show box counts?
Cartons cover different square footage depending on plank size and product line. Without your specific SKU dimensions, box counts would be misleading.
